Proclamation - Go Red for Women Day

Heart disease and stroke claim the lives of nearly 400 Alaskan women each year (more than one death every day).

Of the Alaskan women who die each year, one in four die from heart disease and stroke. More Alaskans die of heart disease and stroke than any other cause of death.

Only 13 percent of women nationwide consider cardiovascular disease their greatest health risk.

In 2006, the estimated direct and indirect cost of cardiovascular diseases and stroke in the U.S. is estimated at $403.1 billion.

February is designated as American Heart Month.

Go Red for Women is the American Heart Association's national call to increase awareness of heart disease - the leading cause of death for women nationwide - and to inspire women to take charge of their heart health.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Frank H. Murkowski, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim February 3, 2006, as:

Go Red for Women Day

in Alaska, and urge all citizens to show their support for women and the fight against heart disease by commemorating this day by the wearing of the color red. By increasing awareness and empowering women to reduce their risk for cardiovascular disease, we can save lives and decrease needless suffering each year.
